The Magic’s Blue Cube initiative is where the promise of the Magic Theatre’s inception is taking root anew: this is the home for the weird, the slippage of time, the leap into pelagic zones of the theatrical imagination. Each year, The Blue Cube Initiative will host 2 productions in rep on the same set: one dedicated boundary-obliterating work from local writers, the other to non-traditional performances from the far-flung corners of the mainstream.
In 2027, the Blue Cube Initiative kicks off with the world premiere of “5 Forgeries,” from Bay Area native Lucas Baisch: A grieving mother denies Munchausen by proxy. A teen prodigy lusts after a boy at school. A hospice nurse is convinced she’s possessed by a Central American dictator. A terminally ill artist scams their mentor. The performers craft model dioramas in real time, oscillating between monologue and scene, with each path leading to The Annual Convention – a cheap, carpeted hotel conference room. Through live-feed projection and scenic re-construction, this experimental play studies the inefficacy of control, the dispossession of land, the creeping rot of the body, and the twin definitions of “possession” as both a system of proprietary capture and a haunting.
