a Rashoman
By Ashley Smiley
Conceived by Joan Osato
Directed by Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe
Home Resident Company- Campo Santo and the Magic Theatre premiere something truly special-
“a Rashomon” for San Francisco. Inspired by the maverick Akira Kurosawa film- a movie whose narrative exploded the way narratives could be told with its multiple conflicting storylines intersecting the same plot. This is a story that seeks multiple truth simultaneously. This version of Rashomon lays the story on Market Street at the foot of the cable car turnaround, as denizens of our City try to answer how a native son- a Black star dancer- died anonymously in his own City. The project, like the narrative, is layered with a creation of a diorama of the City, puppets, and original videography. Conceived by Joan Osato and created with writer Ashley Smiley of Dirty White Teslas Make Me Sad, Director Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe, with an incredible cast including: Juan Amador, Nora el Samahy, Britney Frazier, and Jeuneé Simon.
